Today's reflections: They questioned Jesus' wisdom and mighty deeds
They said: "Where did this man get this wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter's son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? Are not his sisters all with us? Were did this man get all this?"And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his native place.” They found him too much for them.
This was how the people of authority looked at Jesus. He was treated with great reproach and He did not get the respect He deserved. They could not accept Jesus and all the good works that He has shared with everyone. The truth and the wisdom that He brought upon them were met with great question and sarcasm for they could not believe that such a lowly and poor man could ever be endowed with such gifts. Their hearts were breaking with disgust for how can Jesus teach with great wisdom and authority when He did not even come from the elite class of learned people neither was He brought up among the wealthy and the rich as the best that He could have was a manger for His birthplace. They said Jesus was a mere carpenter and what good can come out of Him. That was how people treated Jesus during His time.
Today and thousands of years later, it is very discouraging to note that man has not changed. We still hear similar comments from people about their neighbor. As such God comes to us with His exhortation that when dealing with our fellow worker in His vineyard, we should look into the goodness that is in him rather than on his faults. We should not look on how one started in life but how one has led his life in pursuit of God and His ways. We should not be concerned if one came into the world with a silver spoon or if one came from a family that has been destitute for generations. All we should consider is the goodness of a man and how he has glorified God in his life.
Because all of us are broken and sinful, we are so susceptible not only to judge others based on our opinion of their faults and their shortcomings, especially those who wound our feelings or those who conflict with our own way of thinking and acting. While we give little or no consideration to their good points we may judge them based on what we perceive them to be and their social standing: who they are in society, what their achievements are, how great their influence is, but most importantly, how thick their pocketbook is. In other words, the more a man exudes with the elements of the world, the more, people are likely to accept him and give him credence as a son of God.
Is this how Jesus wants us to treat each other? Given some degree of authority within God's family, is this how we will address our other co-workers and those who shall endeavor to work for Him?
Jesus was looked down upon by the church elders and this hampered his fruitfulness as Scripture says," He could work no miracle there, apart from curing a few who were sick by laying hands on them, so much did their lack of faith distress him." If we discriminate a fellow worker in Christ we hamper not only His ministry but also his spiritual growth and we are therefore answerable to God.
If ever we will be set aside and be treated the way they treated Jesus, let us not fight back but humbly receive the insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when we are weak, that is when we are strong. That is when Christ dwells in us, the time when His grace is more than sufficient for us, when we are able to do what others may consider as impossible and beyond us!
Our conduct may meet opposition from those who openly oppose Christian morality and those who practice a water-down version of the Faith. We should set aside any fears of ‘rocking the boat’ (speaking and standing for the TRUTH) should our upright conduct provoke criticism or rejection. We should not hide our Christian identity and even desire to be politically aligned with those who have power and influence. Amidst the material world, we ought to SPEAK for Jesus as He said: Whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. Our Lord teaches us that confessing our faith is a requirement for being His follower, no matter what the consequences may be. With God’s grace, we will be able to stand firm with our faith and do His Will. Everything we have belongs to the Lord.

Every man who endeavors to work for the Lord has been blessed with God's goodness and love. Always decide based on the goodness of the heart of a man rather than his sins and faults.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, when I chance to see a co-worker do something seemingly imperfect, give me the grace to see the goodness in the person and to credit him with the good intentions he no doubt possesses because He is one of your children whom You love so well. In Jesus, I hope and pray. Amen.

Today's reflection: How do we know if we really know who Jesus is?
Do we really know who Jesus is and what He is about? Do we really have faith in Him as the true Christ, our Savior and Redeemer? To respond to such questions we ought to ask ourselves: Have I spent serious time with the Lord to really know His mind, His heart and His character? Have I kept His Word in my heart and applied it to my life to see my circumstances through His eyes, to see my life through His eyes? Have I trusted Jesus that I have given Him the chance to rearrange my life on the basis of what He wants for me? Am I the person He wanted me to be because my heart is bonded to Him? Do I believe I know Jesus because with His grace I have tried my very best to live my life for Him despite my shortcomings, my brokenness and imperfections?
A man whose circumstances may not exactly reflect the best can be capable of showing great faith in our Lord. Martha was that such example. Even without fully comprehending Jesus, she rose up in faith and believed in what Jesus had to say. Her witness showed that because she believed, she was able to understand the supernatural.
In the same light, a man who may have just frequented the church and the sacraments only in the recent past may also know God intimately and have the kind of faith that is firmly founded in Jesus. The only pre-requisite to knowing our Lord is to have a heart that is open to His Spirit, a heart that hears and abides in His Word and is obedient to it.
When a man seeks God and comes to know Him, He perfects his faith and he is able to transcend what one may believe as impossible. With God everything else is possible. Faith enables and empowers. With God’s grace and the power of the Spirit, man is able to see through God’s eyes and do things according to His wisdom and strength.
Today, through Martha’s witness, Jesus is making us realize that what we need is faith. He is telling us: "Our Father is with you. He knows exactly what you need, and He wants to give it to you. Trust him. Open your heart to him. Walk with Him and be not afraid, for all the world is His, and you are His very own special children.
She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world."

Other Notes
Martha was a person who really loved people and wanted them to enjoy life. She was blessed with that kind of magnanimous, enthusiastic personality. When she heard Jesus was coming for a visit, she began the preparations for a banquet to end all banquets. It’s the way important people are meant to be treated. Notice: that is what Martha wanted to do. What she should have tried to find out was what Jesus expected or needed. Martha’s over exuberance was her first miscue.
Her mistake was the one often made by people overly anxious to please. They think of their service in terms of what they know that they can provide for the ones they hope to impress. But the charitable approach of successful people is to provide what would most satisfy their loved ones. But as soon as Martha realized time was running out and she would not be able to take care of all the chores she went to Jesus and asked: “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” Jesus responded: “Mary has chosen the better part.” Martha should have gotten the picture immediately. Leave the kitchen, forget the banquet and join with Mary at the feet of Christ. However, everyone finds it difficult to give up personal plans and cooperate with another’s.
Many times we become so comfortable with our ministries and find so much success in what we are doing that it’s impossible to give up even when we become incapacitated or too infirmed to continue. There is always the suspicion no one is qualified to replace us. Too often we stay so long that we begin to lose our effectiveness and even become a detriment to the entire enterprise. Have you ever noticed how often this happens with volunteers, even in parish settings?
It’s a blessing to have magnanimous and enthusiastic volunteers on your roster. And you pray that they’ll continue to be interested and cooperative in the communal expectations and needs. Then too, what a blessing it is when those people become aware they no longer have the energy or competence to continue and graciously bow out letting others take over.

"He became the model of Catholicism for me because he was so involved with his church as a deacon," said Father Silloway, adding that his grandfather visited the sick and those in prison, as well as assisting priests at Mass.
"He would always talk to me about what a great thing it is to have a vocation in the Church, to be serving the Lord, serving the people, and I guess that kind of rubbed off on me at an early age," Father Silloway said. "He always said I would be the family's little priest."
One of four children of Lyndon and Cindy Silloway, Father Silloway grew up in Peachtree City and remained close to home most of his life. But the desire to live the ordained life wasn't always prominent. During the years between his early encounters with his grandfather and his entrance into the seminary, Father Silloway said that desire to serve the Church "went on the back burner" before resurfacing in high school and again in college.
The 27-year-old remembers going to confession when he was in high school and hesitantly confessing this thought that he may be called to the priesthood. At the time, the teenager felt it was more like something he wanted to get off his chest rather than something he wanted to truly explore.
As Father Silloway went off to college at the University of Georgia in Athens, he felt another desire swelling up--the desire to be a pilot in the U.S. Air Force.
"I wanted to fly airplanes with every fiber of my being," said Father Silloway. "And that's still there. If I can figure out a way to be a priest and a pilot at the same time, hallelujah."
But being partially colorblind and asthmatic short-circuited his dream of the Air Force.
"At that point, the Lord was really able to speak to my heart and say, 'Are you ready now to listen to what I want to tell you?'" he said. Check out more at the link.

23 Reasons Why A Priest Should Wear His Collar

Here are the first 10 reasons:
#1 The Roman collar is a sign of priestly consecration to the Lord. As a wedding ring distinguishes husband and wife and symbolizes the union they enjoy, so the Roman collar identifies bishops and priests (and often deacons and seminarians) and manifests their proximity to the Divine Master by virtue of their free consent to the ordained ministry to which they have been (or may be) called.
#2 By wearing clerical clothing and not possessing excess clothes, the priest demonstrates adherence to the Lord's example of material poverty. The priest does not choose his clothes - the Church has, thanks to her accumulated wisdom over the past two millennia. Humble acceptance of the Church's desire that the priest wear the Roman collar illustrates a healthy submission to authority and conformity to the will of Christ as expressed through his Church.
#3 Church Law requires clerics to wear clerical clothing. We have cited above number 66 of the Directory for priests, which itself quotes canon 284.
#4 The wearing of the Roman collar is the repeated, ardent desire of Pope John Paul 11. The Holy Father's wish in this regard cannot be summarily dismissed; he speaks with a special charism. He frequently reminds priests of the value of wearing the Roman collar.In a September 8, 1982 letter to Ugo Cardinal Poletti, his Vicar for the Diocese of Rome, instructing him to promulgate norms concerning the use of the Roman collar and religious habit, the Pontiff observed that clerical dress is valuable "not only because it contributes to the propriety of the priest in his external behavior or in the exercise of his ministry, but above all because it gives evidence within the ecclesiastical community of the public witness that each priest is held to give of his own identity and special belonging to God."In a homily on November 8, 1982 the Pope addressed a group of transitional deacons whom he was about to ordain to the priesthood. He said that if they tried to be just like everyone else in their "style of life" and "manner of dress," then their mission as priests of Jesus Christ would not be fully realized.
#5 The Roman collar prevents "mixed messages"; other people will recognize the priest's intentions when he finds himself in what might appear to be compromising circumstances. Let's suppose that a priest is required to make pastoral visits to different apartment houses in an area where drug dealing or prostitution is prevalent. The Roman collar sends a clear message to everyone that the priest has come to minister to the sick and needy in Christ's name. Idle speculation might be triggered by a priest known to neighborhood residents visiting various apartment houses dressed as a layman.
#6 The Roman collar inspires others to avoid immodesty in dress, words and actions and reminds them of the need for public decorum. A cheerful but diligent and serious priest can compel others to take stock of the manner in which they conduct themselves. The Roman collar serves as a necessary challenge to an age drowning in impurity, exhibited by suggestive dress, blasphemous speech and scandalous actions.
#7 The Roman collar is a protection for one's vocation when dealing with young, attractive women. A priest out of his collar (and, naturally, not wearing a wedding ring) can appear to be an attractive target for the affections of an unmarried woman looking for a husband, or for a married woman tempted to infidelity.
#8 The Roman collar offers a kind of "safeguard "for oneself. The Roman collar provides a reminder to the priest himself of his mission and identity: to witness to Jesus Christ, the Great High Priest, as one of his brother-priests.
#9 A priest in a Roman collar is an inspiration to others who think: "Here is a modern disciple of Jesus." The Roman collar speaks of the possibility of making a sincere, lasting commitment to God. Believers of diverse ages, nationalities and temperaments will note the virtuous, other-centered life of the man who gladly and proudly wears the garb of a Catholic priest, and perhaps will realize that they too can consecrate themselves anew, or for the first time, to the loving Good Shepherd.
#10 The Roman collar is a source of beneficial intrigue to non-Catholics. Most non- Catholics do not have experience with ministers who wear clerical garb. Therefore, Catholic priests by virtue of their dress can cause them to reflect - even if only a cursory fashion - on the Church and what she entails.
